Try one of these healthy cocktail ideas!

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Beer

You’re a down-home, no-frills sort of person who gets along with most people. You have a thirst for life and like to enjoy it. At a party, you’re recounting a story as others wait breathlessly.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: White Wine

Cautious and pragmatic, you never get in too much trouble when you party. You care about everything, sometimes too much. Socially responsible, you’re not into trendy protests; you’ve been working behind the scenes for years. At a party, you’re usually listening to others spill their guts, but when you do talk, everyone listens.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Red Wine

You love the good life. Hard-working, you never do things halfway, although, occasionally, you go a little too far. People listen to you, because they like you. At a party, you get along with everyone.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Champagne

You are always in control of your actions. On the very rare occasions you unleash your emotions, watch out! A planner, you sometimes become disconcerted when things change too quickly for your liking. At a party, you’re off to the side assessing what’s going on and calculating how you can use it to your advantage.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Martini

A traditionalist, you don’t like change. Not the most innovative person around, you’re very determined and more likely to finish what you start than most. At a party, you’re likely to leave with the male or female you want.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Old Fashioned

Determined, daring, and ambitious all describe you. Although you’re sometimes blunt, your statements are always backed up by fact. Buying a throw-away or cheap item is contrary to your very nature. At a party, you’re working the room.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Bloody Mary

You don’t depend on external things for your sense of worth; instead, your inner confidence always shines through. Simplicity is your watchword: You’d rather live in a cabin in the woods than a mansion. At a party, you interact with a select number of people whom you’ve chosen carefully.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Frozen Margarita

The life of the party, your dazzling personality attracts people to you like a moth to a flame. You know your effect on people and aren’t afraid to use it to get what you want. Your mischievous attitude sometimes gets you in trouble.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Manhattan

Well-traveled and sophisticated, you have difficulty understanding people you perceive as lazy or ignorant. You are at your best when faced with a challenge. At a party, you only speak to people you know or know of.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Mimosa

Your sophisticated exterior hides a tender heart. Sometimes, you care too much. Extremely creative, sometimes, your ideas are a little off the track. At a party, you rarely approach anyone you don’t know, but people approach you, because they recognize instinctively what an insightful person you are.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Mai Tai

You’re not only dancing on the bar at a party, you’ve somehow persuaded Frozen Margarita to get up there with you. Charismatic but wild, when you’re able to focus, you perform amazing feats.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Mojito

A tad entitled, you’re accustomed to demanding the best. You want what you want, and nothing else will do. You’ve been known to throw away things because they weren’t good enough. Always fashionable, your appearance at a party is always greeted by comments about how good you look.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Screwdriver

A crusader, you’re never happier than when you have a cause to promote. You need alone time to rejuvenate from constantly giving of yourself. At a party, you’re off by yourself frequently, but it doesn’t bother you at all.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage: Sangria

Living life to the fullest means constantly trying new things, whether it’s going on a cruise or volunteering. You may flit from activity to activity, but while you’re interested, you give it your all. At a party, you’re the social butterfly, equally at ease with people from all backgrounds.

Drink Alcohol in Moderation

There’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks, but it’s especially important for older adults to control alcohol intake. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends that people over age 65 should have no more than 7 drinks a week and no more than 3 drinks in a day.

1 drink equals:

  • One 12-ounce can or bottle of regular beer, ale, or wine cooler
  • One 8- or 9-ounce can or bottle of malt liquor
  • One 5-ounce glass of red or white wine
  • One 1.5-ounce shot glass of hard liquor, 80 proof or less

The recommendations for older adults are lower than those for the general population, because alcohol is sometimes metabolized differently by older people. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, “Some older people can feel ‘high’ without increasing the amount of alcohol they drink. This ‘high’ can make them more likely to have accidents, including falls and fractures and car crashes.”

Even if you’ve been drinking all your life, it’s wise to inform your doctor that you drink and how much you drink if your prescription medication changes. If you purchase a new herbal medication or supplement or over-the-counter medicine, ask your pharmacist if it has negative interactions with alcohol. Prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal remedies can be dangerous when mixed with alcohol.
